God is Deeply in Love with Us!
Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” – John 1:38
When we look at this verse from John’s gospel, I think we tend to focus on the question Jesus puts to the two disciples. What are you looking for is a great question, and the answer is different for each of us. This time, as I read this verse, what strikes me are the words, “Jesus turned…” It is Jesus’ action that catches my attention and tugs at my heart.
Picture yourself standing with John the Baptist as Jesus walks by. John says “Behold, the Lamb of God.” You hear those words and decide without hesitation, to follow Jesus. What are you thinking as you follow Him? Are you puzzling at John’s title for Jesus as the Lamb of God? Are you wondering where Jesus is going? Are you thinking about your family? Are you wondering how long you’ll be gone today; how long this ‘following’ might take?
Your thoughts are interrupted as Jesus stops and turns to you. His eyes meet yours. It’s as if Jesus can see your heart. In His eyes you see beauty, grace, and warmth. His gaze is filled with a love that you have never felt before. You know in that moment you will follow where He leads and go where he goes for as long as you live.
“Jesus turned and saw them…” Jesus turns and sees us. Jesus always turns in our direction and calls us to Himself. God runs to us with open arms and longs for us to spend time with Him. Let us meet God’s gaze today, turn toward Him, and follow the Lamb of God.
Jesus, I trust in you.
